Group H
SPAIN
World Cup participations: 11
Greatest World Cup achievement: 4th place (1950)
Spain - in club football maybe the number 1 (Real Madrid und Barcelona),
also having a very strong league, but the national side disappoints again
and again.
It is a shame that for such a footballing nation the 4th place in the year
1950 is still the greatest achievement.
Qualification for Germany was no promenade - after the 2nd place behind
Serbia in the group phase, Spain had to take the long way round the
play-off against Slovakia.
Although there are plenty of stars in the team of Luis Aragones.
Raul and Atletico Madrid's young striker Fernando Torres, but also
Jose A. Reyes, Xabi Alonso, Fabregas, Ramos,
Puyol and goalkeeper Casillas all have very good names internationally.
Spains offensive performances have always been linked with Raul, but he
fights against recurring injuries - Spain's performances at the world cup
will also depend on the fitness of its captain.
And it will be important how Spain will cope with the public pressure.
There is not too much that militates in favour of Spain, but what does is
the draw. A very easy group and finishing as winner Switzerland or South Korea
would presumably wait in the round of the last 16, so the quarter final already
seems to be preprogrammed and then you can also be lucky in 3 more matches
- we will risk a few quid on a world cup winner bet on Spain.
The odds on Spain as world cup winner were rather high
- 13.0 at Betandwin.
For a bet on group winner Spain you get 1.45.
