Group E
CZECH REPUBLIC
World Cup participations: 8
Greatest World Cup achievement: 2nd place (1934, 1962)
In the qualifcation the Czech remained second in the group behind
Holland, but could then easily qualify in the play-off against Norway.
Tomas Rosicky play in the national side somehow always much
better than at club level in Dortmund. Milan Baros hopes to repeat
his performances of Euro 2004 and we have to see if Pavel Nedved even
plays at the world cup.
Jankulovski of AC Milan and goalkeeper Petr Cech of Chelsea are
further stars.
Before the Euro 2004 the Czech Republic was favourite, but
then disappointed in the semi-final against Greece.
Of that shock the Czech still have not completely recovered.
Nevertheless - the Czech Republic is number 2 in the Fifa world
ranking list - as such you can speculate with the world cup triumph -
but we are not even sure if they survive the group stage.
The odds on Czech Republic as world cup winner were quite high
- 26.0 at Betandwin.
For a bet on group winner Czech Republic you get 3.15.
Czech
Republic
The Czechs carry the heavy burden of expectations, being one of
under-dogs and a forceful comeback waits the team that fell out of Euro
2004 and missed out on the previous World Cup 2002. The team’s qualification resulted in coach Karel Bruckner having his contract extended until 2006. The squad still has some of
the popular faces in: Karel Poborsky, Vladimir Smicer (out injured)
and leading the attack is Jan Koller and Milan Baros. Injuries and bad form might haunt the Czech, but the team’s well-balanced nature will stand in good stead.
Coaches:
Karel Bruckner.
