 World U/17 Championship winner in 1997. In the same year made his debut for Gremio. Played in 1999 World Youth Cup. Scored a brilliant goal in his Copa America international debut helping them to go on and win the tournament after only being called up when Edilson was dropped. Helped Brazil reach the final which they lost to Mexico but finished as top scorer in the Confederations Cup in  1999. Helped Brazil qualify for the 2000 Olympics where he was part of the team that was surprisingly knocked out in the quarter-finals. Will probably make a European move at the end of the season. Moved to Paris St-Germain in 2001 but his debut was delayed over a dispute eventually settled by FIFA over what PSG owed Gremio for the transfer, although he was out of contract when he made the move. Scored two goals and was named in the All-Star Team as Brazil won the 2002 World Cup.
