1970 World Cup - Mexico
Cubillas was only 20 when he made his World Cup debut at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. Not only did he fulfil all the fans' expectations, he became a househole name after the tournament. He was considered no less a star than Jairzinho, Muller, Beckenbauer and Rivera. Some even compared him to a youthful Pele.
1978 World Cup - Mexico
Peru failed to qualify for the 1974 World Cup. But when Cubillas returned to play in the tournament in Argentina, Cubillas had hardly lost the exhilarating form he showed in Mexico. First, he scored two memorable goals in the opening match against Scotland, one from a free-kick. Then, Peru was held by the mighty Holland but Cubillas scored a hat-trick in the game against Iran, including two penalties.
However, just like in Mexico, Peru fail to win against stronger opponents and this time, they lost to Brazil, Poland and Argentina in the second group phase.
1982 World Cup - Mexico
Now a veteran 32-year-old, Cubillas was the first choice attacker. He played in all three group matches but without Cubillas at his best, Peru finished bottom of their group and fail to qualify for the second round.
