1958 World Cup - Sweden
Few people expect Fontaine to be in the starting line-up for the 1958 World Cup. Bliard, the first-choice center-forward, was injured just before the tournament began and Fontaine made the most of this opportunity. Combining well with Raymond Kopa, Fontaine often finishes off Kopa's creative passes and he top-scored the World Cup with 13 goals, a record haul. Fontaine also became one of the few players to score four or more goalswhen he hit the net 4 times in the third-place play-off against West Germany.
