1966 World Cup - EnglandYou may consider Eusebio a young player, at the age of 24, to star at the 1966 finals. As a matter of fact, he had been one of Europe's top players for a while already, having succeeded Di Stefano and Puskas as the greatest marksman in Europe. In this World Cup, he would turn on some extraordinary performances for Portugal, his adopted country.
Athough Eusebio did not score in his first game, he quickly found his scoring touch in his second, against Bulgaria. Brazil was unlucky to be on the receiving end of his awesome form. The Brazilian keeper fumbled his cross and Simoes scored easily. Eusebio quickly score a goal himself, this time with a headed shot. was the first goal he scored two goals in a 3-1 victory that eliminated the world champions.
In the quarter-finals against dark-horses North Korea, Eusebio produced one of the greatest individual performances and one of the greatest come-back in soccer history. Trailed the Koreans by 3 goals, Eusebio scored 4 times and beat the Asian side 5-3.
Marked out of the game by England's Nobby Stiles in the semi-final, Eusebio was subdued and Portugal was beaten. But that is not the end of the road for his tournament. In the third-place match, Eusebio scored one more goal in the next match against Yashin's U.S.S.R. and helped his country to a honorable third place. He scored a total of 9 goals in 6 games. However, for all his abilities, Eusebio would never return to grace the competition again.
